Scott grew up a Catholic who, after seeing the movie Gandhi, and reading a lot about Martin Luther King, Jr., decided he wanted to be like them, doing non-violent social justice. He got a college degree in journalism and spent more than ten years trying to increase the empathy and decrease the apathy of readers. He then made a career change to education then into special education, continuing his desire to help marginalized communities.. For more then ten years now he has been working in mental health, often with teenagers with autism. Among his current tasks is teaching a class at University of Texas about Harry Potter to adults with special needs. Through his Unitarian Universalism church he leads anti-racism education and social justice, often as part of local groups led by people of color. For at least 15 years he has been reading 50 books a year and interviewing about 25 authors.
