Steve Hochman has covered popular, and unpopular, music for more than 33 1/3 years, these days primarily in the fabulicious web publication the Bluegrass Situation. He’s best-known for his 22+ years with the Los Angeles Times, as well as long stints as music critic for two popular radio shows: Pasadena station KPCC’s Take Two and San Francisco-based KQED’s the California Report. Over the years he also had hundreds of bylines in Rolling Stone, Variety, Billboard, Entertainment Weekly, BuzzBandsLA and others. Among his many highlights: Having Little Richard do a phone machine greeting (“You can leave a message at the sound of the WOOOOOO!”), getting Morocco travel tips from Mick Jagger and sharing a byline with Tom Petty on a 1989 tour diary for Rolling Stone.
