Cole Huling: “the deer”

the deer

entering the field at sunrise
veiled by mist and shadow
knows nothing
of war or weaponry
land claims, violence or
crimes against humanity

a twig cracks

knows only
of being prey
in a land of predators

soft skin defenseless
against all that want to
rip her to shreds
limbs scattered and steaming

every day
she steps into the field
lets the sun radiate on her
bright and hopeful fur

her eyes wide and glossy
scanning the horizon
grazing in the face of fear
her only goal
to survive
until twilight falls once more
