Four must-have tools to start your construction business

“If you build it, they will come.” It seems easy, right? Wrong! There is so much to think about and consider before jumping into building your own construction business.

Having the right tools is essential for anyone starting a construction business. You can have the greatest idea in the world, but if you lack the right equipment and tools, you won’t get very far.

Have you ever considered starting your own construction company? According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the market is hot right now, and construction jobs are growing faster than any other job in the United States. That’s a lot of demand for new construction companies to fill. To help you get started, I’m going to take you through five different tools used in nearly every successful construction business today.

  1. Plant machinery

If you want to start a construction business of your own, you will often need to invest in some plant machinery. Some businesses can get away with smaller machinery, and obviously, you do not need a digger or B track loader if you are doing work on the first floor of a house rather than the rooftop.

The plant machinery is a heavy construction equipment that moves in soil, fluids, and other soft media. Heavy machinery comprises all types of industrial trucks, bulldozers, excavators, cranes, forklifts, and even road-building machines.

Tool hire is something that may not come to your mind when you think about starting a business. But the fact of the matter is it should be up there alongside your planning of business ideas and how you are going to market them.

  1. Software

To know what software you need, you have to know what your construction business is going to be doing. Are you a construction management firm that will be handling the projects from start to finish? What about a remodeling company that mostly does renovation work? Or do you want to handle most residential work?

From estimating softwares like Procore to project management solutions like Fieldwire, you can’t go wrong with any of them. But, what if you’re just starting your own business and don’t have a lot of cash? No matter if you’re just starting or have been running a construction business for many years, there’s always room for growth and improvement. And to do your job better, you need to always be on the lookout for new tools that could help make your hiring, managing, and estimating projects easier.

  1. Ladders

The first thing you’ll want to look for in a ladder is sturdiness. You’ll also want a ladder with an anti-slip top and non-conductive components. As well as the obvious tools of hammers, screwdrivers and electric drills, there are a number of other products that construction workers will use throughout the day. These must-have tools to start your construction business are one of those.

Ladder hire often proves cost-effective and is used by many people for a variety of jobs. Hiring a ladder is not only safer but helps you to work at height without having to worry about whether you have the appropriate training and right equipment.

  1. Paints, sealants and adhesive

For most repairs and home improvement projects, you will need the basics: a variety of adhesives (white glue, wood glue, epoxy), at least one kind of sealant (silicone, polyurethane or urethane), sanding material (paper and/or sandpaper) and essential tools like a tape measure.

No need to run out and buy the most expensive kits right from the start; you can pick up some basic tools fairly cheaply and accumulate more tools as your business grows. A good rule of thumb is to have at least one tool bag per worker, with an extra one or two for tools that are frequently used on the job site.
