In a Stranger Land

Judith Margolis never puts herself in an easy place.  Or, perhaps, the place where she is put is never easy.

She recently stayed in our spare bedroom, when her temporary residence proved uninhabitable.  (She’s since found a good apartment.)  She’s stayed with us before, on her visits to LA, and part of her stays with us always: one of her oils on canvas, Schekina, is stapled to our wall.  It’s a large canvas with a draped nude female figure painted in muted tones that has been, alternately, a source of controversy and respect in the Jewish community.

Difficult places are not solely the result of her travels.  She lives in a small village outside Jerusalem, overlooking the desert.  The complexity of her life there is not limited to the barren landscape.

Fittingly, Judith’s work speaks to the friction between the lives we wish to lead and the world we actually live in.  Lucky Los Angeles residents can see her current show at The Loft at Liz’s, where she has converted the Project Room into a working studio.  Judith is working on a large drawing/collage and she’s been encouraging visitors to bring found objects and engage on art-making on-site to expand the work.

On August 16, at 7:00 pm Pacific Time, Judith will give a lecture and lead an interactive discussion, where she’ll incite even further collaboration.  The talk will also be streamed live here.  It’s a continuation of Judith’s commitment to making art in a world where creativity itself is often perceived as a foreign object.
