Now I know what love is

When I was a little girl,

My father told me

“Love is a seed.

If you tell it sweet words everyday,

Your love will bloom”.

When I went to Primary School,

My father told me

“Love is a tree.

If you water it everyday,

Your love will grow up.”

When I went to Secondary School,

I had my first love.

My father told me

“Love is a flower.

But if you want to study well,

You shouldn’t pluck it.”

When I went to High School,

I had crush on my deskmate.

My father told me

“Love is a sweet candy.

If you don’t want to have tooth decay,

You should’t depend on it.”

When I graduated from University,

My father told me

“Love is sharing.

If you know how to share and listen,

Your love will bloom.”

When I was 40 years old,

No definitions of love anymore.

Love is not a seed that just needs sweet words to bloom,

It needs more than dreams.

Love is not a tree that just needs water to grow up,

It needs more than physical caring.

Love is not a sweet candy, either.

Sometimes it’s bitter, sometimes it’s sour.

Sometimes it’s spicy, sometimes it’s insipid.

And sharing is not everything of love.

Sometimes we need to push,

Sometimes we need to pull.

Sometimes we need to cry,

Sometimes we need to leave.

My little girl asked me

“Mom, what is love?”

And a new story started,

“Love is a seed.

If you tell it sweet words everyday,

Your love will bloom.”
