The Jack Grapes Poetry Prize

The Jack Grapes Poetry Prize is named for Los Angeles legend, poet, author, raconteur, publisher, teacher, playwright, and actor extraordinaire, Jack Grapes. Jack is the author of twenty-four books of poetry, including Last of the Outsiders: Collected Poems, 1969-2019, and Wide Road to the Edge of the World: 301 Haiku, with an introduction in 201 paragraphs and 601 chapters. Jack is the editor of the legendary literary journal, ONTHEBUS, and the recipient of numerous publishing awards, grants and literary fellowships. As a teacher and mentor, Jack’s “Method Writing” system has transformed the lives of thousands of writers and poets, helping them to achieve literary excellence, hone their true voice, and find publication and success. Who better than Jack to be the face of our poetry contest?

Our yearly poetry prize and contest began in 2013 when we were Cultural Weekly and Jack Grapes was Jack Grapes. Jack is still Jack, and we are now Cultural Daily. The poetry prize is also our poetry open submission period.

The contest is free to enter, and attracts poets worldwide. All poems are read “blind” by our team poet-judges. Winners and finalists receive cash awards as well as publication. For many nascent poets, The Jack Grapes Poetry Prize has been a launch-pad for their career, catapulting them onto the world stage.
