You Cannot Write in the Wrong Shoes

Christmas 1966 I was in sixth grade and desperate. I really had the wrong shoes. It was so bad that one day I pretended to “forget” that I had on my little black bootie slippers and wore them to school… somehow a better choice than the horrible oxblood penny loafers my mom insisted on. My relentless begging ( and slipper-wearing antics) resulted in a jackpot on Christmas morning: White Go-Go Boots. Totally made my life better. Seriously, thank you Nancy Sinatra. Definitely better culturally if not creatively, though I can imagine the Go-Go Boots freed up my inner artist.

Here’s Nancy Sinatra’s 1966 hit song, that may have inspired Julie.
